Nylex Prefabricated Vertical Drains (03/12/2005)
In saturated soils such as clay and silty clays, which have a large percentage of voids or pores usually filled with water, large settlement will occur over a long period of time when a load such as a road embankment is placed on top of the soil. The load will result in an initial increase in porewater pressure which will dissipate slowly as the porewaterdrains off. During this process called consolidation, the load is gradually transferred to the soil particles as the volume of the voids are reduced and this culminates in the form of settlement. The consolidation process-due to the very low permeability of clay soil and silty clay soil, the consolidation process will take many years. In order to accelerate and reduce the consolidation time, vertical drains are installed at regular close spacing to the full depth of the compressible layer, to create artificial and shorter horizontal drainage paths for the pore water to drain off. In addition, this will also take advantage of the higher permeability of the soil strata or sand lenses in the horizontal direction. During this accelerated process, the soil will gain an increase in shear strength. Normally, vertical drains are used in conjunction with preloading by surcharge with soil or vacuum pressure. In projects like tank farms, water can also be used as surcharge. Nylex offers another innovative product, the all new turfpro, specially designed to support and distribute vehicle loads to the base course without damaging the turf surface. A rigid base such as sandy gravel base course is required to receive the loads transmitted through turfpro. Sand is used to fill the cells of turfpro to avoid over compaction and at the same time maintain porosity for air and water movement. The turf is installed by either sodding, seeding and mulching or hydroseeding. NYLEX STRIPDRAIN is a fully filtered, prefabricated, high efficiency, subsoil drainage system that prevents water infiltration into structures. It affords protection for roads, railways, building foundations and other structures, as well as providing rapid drainage of sports fields and stabilizing sloping ground. STRIPDRAIN is comprised of a plastic core deep-formed to provide excellent drainage flow capacity, overwrapped with a geotextile filter fabric. It is a lightweight, flexible and easy to install product, requiring no on-site assembly of separate components. Because STRIPDRAIN is a fully filtered system, the excavated material can be used as backfill in most application providing that the material is sandy silt or sandy gravel. Apart from that, the unique geometry of STRIPDRAIN enables the use of narrow cable trenchers that provide further savings in equipment and trench costs. STRIPDRAIN has a standard thickness of 40mm and with a variety of depths ranging from 100mm up to 500mm depending on the discharge capacity required.
